Maria Creech

PhD Researcher, Writer & Freelance Curator

I’m currently in the second year of an AHRC-funded collaborative PhD between Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, Media and Culture (JOMEC) and Imperial War Museums.

My PhD project focuses on official photographs documenting Britain’s so-called ‘Emergency’ wars. I explore the role of Empire (and its legacies) in shaping the production, circulation and absorption of this material into state archives.

I run a Cardiff-based research network for postgraduate researchers & early career researchers working in any area related to photography.

In my curatorial work, I use performance and visual sources to tell stories that draw primarily upon themes of diasporic identity, displacement, survival and memory.

I have an MA in Museum Studies from the University of Amsterdam and a BA in History of Art from the University of Cambridge.

I’m half English, half Polish. I spend a fair bit of time thinking about the Polish half.

I’m currently based between Cardiff, Slough and London.
